The taxation landscape in Eswatini
Eswatini’s taxation system is designed to balance revenue generation with economic competitiveness, making it relatively simple yet increasingly sophisticated. Administered by the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS), the framework consists of direct taxes such as corporate and personal income tax, and indirect taxes including value-added tax (VAT) and customs duties. A significant feature of the system is its reliance on Southern African Customs Union (SACU) revenues, which links the country’s fiscal position to regional trade performance.
Corporate income tax, currently at 25%, reflects the government’s intention to attract investment while maintaining fiscal stability. However, this is complemented by tighter regulations, including transfer pricing rules and limitations on assessed losses, signalling a shift towards stronger compliance. VAT, levied at 15%, remains a key revenue driver and requires careful management of input and output tax to avoid compliance risks. Meanwhile, the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system ensures efficient collection of personal income tax, placing responsibility on employers to maintain accurate payroll processes. As enforcement intensifies, businesses in Eswatini must move beyond basic compliance and adopt a more strategic approach to taxation. This includes proper structuring of cross-border transactions to manage withholding tax exposure, leveraging available tax incentives such as Development Approval Orders, and maintaining robust financial records. At Gebsna Business Solutions, the focus is on helping businesses navigate this evolving landscape—turning tax into a strategic tool for efficiency, growth, and long-term resilience.
